StarVR New High-End Virtual Reality Headset

Oculus and HTC blending products may always be a standard for presenting the virtual reality content. However, Acer has also explored this field for a long time before they start marketing the Windows Mixed Reality headset. Through collaboration with the studio creator of The Chronicles of Riddick, The Escape from Butcher Bay, the Taiwanese company is working on StarVR.

Unlike Vive and Rift, StarVR from the beginning was specialized for the cinematic realm. The device offers a level of resolution above average which is 2560x1440p. However, the device is not sold freely to the public but to entertainment companies. In the 2018 SIGGRAPH event that held in Vancouver, Acer revealed the new version of it. The manufacturer named it as StarVR One.

So far, Acer has not revealed the specific details of this new version. Surely, these new head-mounted displays carry features and technology that are more sophisticated than the previous variants. Manufacturers say that this version is designed to increase the sensation of your presence in the virtual world. It is supported by the new breakthrough architecture which allows the field of view to reach 100 percent when the eyes look forward.

It presents horizontal FoV 210 degrees and is vertical at 130 degrees. In the Project CARS 2 racing simulation game that was displayed from the first person perspective, this new headset lets us see clearly the car door next to the driver to the end of the dashboard. In other HMDs, our point of view may be limited to the area in front of our eyes.

Acer and StarBreeze Studios utilize the RGB AMOLED screen type that offering 16 million sub-pixels at a refresh rate of 90 images per second. Another aspect that makes this new high-end headset special is the support of Tobii Technology's eye movement tracking system. This technology had been carried by a number of consumer devices such as gaming laptops and SteelSeries Sentry. With it, the manufacturer can apply the foveated feature to dynamic rendering.

The system is able to read focus the focus of the eye, then rendering high-quality objects in the area where the eye is seen while reducing the detail in other zones. So, the hardware work is more efficient. This headset has a sharp appearance like its predecessor with a weight of approximately 450g.

On the front side, we can see the sensor basins that are ready to support the SteamVR 2.0 tracker. Them it is connected to a PC via cable. This is unknown when this new version will be available and how much it will cost.
